Your Very Own Gun Show

The bicep curl is the quintessential (Quinn Essential?) arm exercise. Just be sure to balance these out with some work on your triceps which make up 70% of your upper arm. You can also combine them with an overhead press to engage the core, shoulders, and triceps.

Happy Mothers Day

My fitness tip today is pretty simple:

Thank your Mom and all the other moms you know for all that they are and for all that they give. For those you’ve lost along the way, take a moment to be thankful for the time you had with them.

Personally, I’d like to thank my mother for her for never ending support throughout my life. Thanks to her, I’ve never once doubted I could achieve anything I put my heart and mind to. And, when I’ve made mistakes or hit roadblocks as we all do, I’ve always had encouragement to get up off the ground and keep moving forward.

I wouldn’t be writing this if it weren’t for her. My passion for service comes from a lifetime of watching her example both professionally and personally. My love for fitness has its roots in one of her essential rules for my brother, sister, and me as children: get outside and play at least once per day. Period. Saturday morning cartoons? Never heard of them. :)

I also want to thank my sister-in-law for all that she brings to our family and for all that she does as the mother of my two nieces and two nephews – the four bundles of joy who’ve redefined my own concept of love. I’m so grateful for the calm, consistent, and loving hand with which she guides them and, at times, all of us.

Happy Mother’s Day to both of you!

Now, whoever you are and wherever you are, if you haven’t done so already, turn off the computer and go thank Mom!

Brooklyn Fitness Tip of the Day

I often get questions about what to eat before you workout.

If you’re a morning fitness buff, you should definitely have a little something if you’re feeling hungry in the morning and if your stomach is up for it. I find any of the following usually work for me when I work out in the AM but you’ll need to figure out what works best for you.

Banana
Half a Cliff Bar (or balance bar, zone perfect bar, luna, pure, power bar, the list goes on…)
Half a bagel
Slice of toast with peanut butter
A small Yogurt
A very small bowl of Cereal (like 1/3 of what you would normally eat for breakfast)
A hand full of nuts and dried fruit (a staple snack in my house)

The first three on the list are my favorites. If you eat your small snack as soon as you wake up along with a full glass of water you should be fine.

All of the above applies to other times of the day too. The key is have some energy (in the form of a snack) within a couple of hours prior to exercise and, ideally, don’t exercise right after a big meal.
